EP374: BLUE SKIES FADE TO GREY

Nick and Stu return to pick the bones out of the 3-0 defeat at Bolton, and the two red cards that made life a little harder for us on the day and for the next couple of weeks. It’s not all bad news though! I mean it’s not great news either, but there’s a Season Ticket survey to review, and a Fair Game Index report that sheds some light on the difficulties clubs are facing financially in this world of insane salaries. ROFHOG and a look ahead to the visit of Rotherham round-off another fun show! Sorry for going long, again – although we’re Wimbledon, and going long should never be considered a bad thing.

Finances is tricky now. Because money drives everything change is going to be very difficult to get through as turkeys don’t vote for Christmas. Those with the most money also pay for the best accountants and legal teams who are as valuable as those who play. The days of 18 man (or woman) squads is gone and now the title is decided on spreadsheets as much as on the pitch. PSR is fine in principle, but there are ways around it and it takes too long for charges to be brought so nothing ever happens (see Man City and recently Chelsea). Allowing clubs to lose £105m over a three year rolling period in the PL and Championship is just encouraging overspending in order to compete. I’m old enough to remember when Jimmy Hill managed to get the maximum wage removed. Hard to blame him for the current situation any more than Bosman. Ultimately its down to the governing bodies both nationally, and across the continents and ultimately the world chasing the £ which has increased the TV exposure for fans who don’t want to pay to go to a game or are geographically unable to attend. A total reset is required but it will never happen, so the gap will get bigger and bigger and the end result will be no promotion or relegation, clubs must implode (and not Bury and Macclesfield but Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday, Derby and Chelsea not because I hate those clubs, but because they need to be made an example of)

Great pod again. Make it my bedtime listening on a Fri because, being an insomniac always on the hunt for something to engage me enough to relax me into a deep sleep, I think it will do the trick but it’s too good to miss any of it. It’s a relaxed vibe and often covers things I don’t know about the club and the Richard Osman Foyo HOG is genius and should have its own show.
