On This Day in 2000 … Wimbledon played out an incredible 4-4 draw against Gillingham in the Nationwide League Division One. The game at Selhurst Park brought together two sides who had entered the second tier from opposite directions the previous season: The Dons relegated from the Premier League, and the Gills earning promotion from Division Two via the play-offs. Wimbledon were clear favourites and a fifth-minute opener from Damien Francis was expected to set the tone for the afternoon, but a series of defensive calamities saw the Gills finish the first half 3-2 ahead. Jason Euell would equalise on the hour mark, and John Hartson’s second of the game ten minutes from time seemed to have settled things in Wimbledon’s favour, only for Carl Asaba to level the scores for the visitors in the 88th minute. All the goals from that mad afternoon can be found on Facebook.

The Dons are now five games unbeaten in League One. The 1-1 draw with Port Vale on Saturday – the first time Wimbledon have shared the spoils in the league this season – was watched by a record Plough Lane attendance of 8,686. Sub Antwoine Hackford opened the scoring on 72 minutes, but Vale deservedly levelled through Devante Cole with four minutes remaining. It’s fair to say the Dons struggled with the number of changes enforced through injury and international call-ups, but Johnnie Jackson told the official web site that he was pleased with the effort of his team, particularly defensively. Vale boss Darren Moore said he was “gutted” not to take all three points from the game. Highlights of the match can be found on YouTube.

Joe Lewis could be back in the squad for the trip to Plymouth Argyle. Joe has missed the last two games with a rib injury, but Johnnie Jackson hopes some rest will see him back in action this weekend. There is no further update on Matty Stevens, but he is unlikely to feature for some time. Tickets for the trip to Home Park are available online for £28 adults; coach travel has sold out.

The management team have all signed new contracts. Johnnie Jackson, Terry Skiverton, and Dave Reddington have penned deals that will keep them at Plough Lane through the end of the 2026-27 season; goalkeeper coach Ashley Bayes has agreed a deal until the end of the 2027-28 campaign. There is some speculation that Jackson was considered for the manager role at Luton Town, and the timing of this announcement might have been influenced by interest from elsewhere, but it is not thought there was any serious chance of him moving to Kenilworth Road.

Wimbledon will host Gateshead in the FA Cup First Round. The National League side will travel to Plough Lane on the weekend of Saturday 1 November; exact date and kick-off time to be confirmed. The two teams have never met in a cup competition.

Myles Hippolyte scored twice in Grenada’s 4-1 win over the British Virgin Islands. He also played in their 2-0 win over Cuba three days later. The two friendlies come midway through the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying campaign, in which Grenada currently sit third in Group B. Ryan Johnson did not feature in either of Northern Ireland’s games this week (a 2-0 win over Slovakia, and a 1-0 defeat to Germany).

AFC Wimbledon Women lost 2-1 to Cheltenham Town on Sunday. Daisy McLachlan equalised on the hour mark for the Dons, but Cheltenham almost immediately retook the lead and held on to move above Wimbledon in the Women’s Premier Division South table. The result leaves Wimbledon winless at home in the league this season. They are next in action at home to Chatham Town in the First Round of the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday 26 October; the game will be played at Plough Lane and kick-off is at 2.00pm.

  2. Your writing has a way of resonating with me on a deep level. It’s clear that you put a lot of thought and effort into each piece, and it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.
