On This Day in 2014 … The Dons defeated Southend United on penalties in the First Round of the Johnstone Paints Trophy at Kingsmeadow. Kevin St Luce gave Wimbledon the lead, before a Jack Payne brace seemed to have won the tie for the visitors, especially after the Dons had Harry Pell sent-off. However, a spectacular goal from Adam Barrett (against his old club) in the last minute took the game to a shoot-out, which the Dons won 4-2. Their prize was a trip to Milton Keynes in the Second Round. A full report can be found here.

Matty Stevens believes we “should have won” at Bradford City . The striker scored his fourth goal of the season in the 3-2 defeat at Valley Parade, but said we “should have scored more goals” and that we should have done better defensively as a team. Stevens’s goal (53′) had put the Dons 2-1 up, but defensive errors led to Bobby Pointon (61′) equalising for the hosts and Will Swan (83′) scoring the winner. Marcus Browne (25′) had put the Dons in front in the first half; Joe Wright’s goal (32′) saw the teams go in level at the break. It was the first time in 17 league games that Wimbledon had conceded a first-half goal. Bradford manager Graham Alexander said he was delighted to win a “tough, physical game“. City have won all their home league matches this season, and remain unbeaten in eight games in league and cup. Highlights of the game can be found on YouTube.
Our next League One fixture is away at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Kick-off at the Burnden Park Stadium is at 3.00pm. Tickets are £20 adults, £5 under-18s, with other concession prices at £15, and can be bought on the Dons ticketing web site. The game will also be available on the Sky Sports Plus service. Bolton are unbeaten at home in the league this season, but have drawn their last four games 1-1. Wimbledon are winless in the last nine meetings between the two sides, and have never won away at Bolton in a league fixture.
We host Stevenage in the Vertu Trophy this evening. Kick-off is at 7.00pm. Bromley host Crystal Palace U21s in the other game in Southern Group A.
Josh Kelly has joined Woking on a season-long loan. The 26-year-old forward will link-up with former Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley. The National League side won their first game of the season on Saturday (2-0 at Morecambe). They travel to Halifax Town tomorrow night (7.45pm).
Brodi Hughes has joined on loan from Chelsea. The 20-year-old arrives on a season-long deal, having played a few games for us in pre-season. Hughes can play at wing-back or centre-half.
Junior Nkeng has joined Chelmsford City on loan. Nkeng will stay with the Clarets for a month. The 18-year-old made his first-team debut away at Reading in the League Cup last week. He played 20 minutes as a substitute in both City’s 2-1 National League South win over Chesham United on Saturday, and in their 5-2 home defeat to Farnborough Town last night.
Ryan Johnson has been selected for international duty by Northern Ireland. Johnson featured 14 times for the under-21 squad between 2015 and 2018, scoring twice. He will be available for World Cup Qualifiers against Luxembourg (Thursday 4th September) in Gasperich, and Germany (Sunday 7th September) in Cologne. He will therefore miss our trip to Bolton.
The Women’s team lost 2-1 to Watford on Sunday. It leaves the Dons winless in three games in the Women’s Premier Division South. Daisy McLachlan’s goal (75′) looked to have earned Wimbledon a point, but the visitors’ Isabella Fisher scored the winner with the last kick of the game. A full report of the match at Plough Lane, attended by over 1,000 fans, can be found on the official web site. The women’s team host Maidenhead United at Imperial Fields on Sunday (7 September; kick-off 2.00pm) with tickets available here.
