On This Day in 1989 … Lawrie Sanchez scored the Dons winner away at Tottenham in the Barclays League Divison One. Sanchez’s defelcted effort after 62 minutes silenced the majority of the crowd of 26,876 at White Hart Lane, and completed the first half of a league double over Spurs, completed at Plough Lane the following April. Wimbledon would end the season in eighth place; Spurs finished third. Sanchez’s goal can be found on Facebook.

Wimbledon are through to the next round of the Football League Trophy. The Dons won 2-1 at Bromley this evening and advance to the Round of 32. Antwoine Hackford and Marcus Browne scored the goals either side of an Idris Odutayo goal for the hosts. The victory helps our finances a little bit, if nothing else. The competition, sponsored by Vertu (no, me neither), pays £10,000 per win.

Saturday’s 5-0 reverse at Peterborough United was the Dons heaviest defeat in over five years. Wimbledon lost by the same scoreline at Oxford United in League One in February 2020, just a short time before the country went into the first Covid lockdown. On Saturday, the Dons found themselves 3-0 down at the break thanks to goals from Blackburn Rovers loanee Ryan Leonard (11′, 16′ pen) and KJ Lisbie (36′), before substitute Gustav Lindgren (77′, 90′) added a second-half brace. Johnnie Jackson said his side were “well off it“, whilst Peterborough boss Luke Williams, taking charge of his first league game as manager at London Road, said it was important his side “weathered a storm” at 2-0 before going on to secure the victory. Peterborough rise to 22nd in the table; the Dons sit seventh after two consecutive league defeats. If you are feeling particularly masochistic, the goals can be found on YouTube. The defending was … not good.

Wimbledon return to league action on Saturday 22 November, at home to Wigan Athletic. Neither side are in action before then, with fixtures this Saturday (15 November), against Stockport County and Reading respectively, postponed due to international call-ups.

Omar Bugiel will miss the Wigan game. His call-up to the Lebanon national side falls the other side of the general international break, with his country due to play on the 18th and 26th November, against Brunei and Sudan respectively. Matty Stevens is not expected to return from his injury until Christmas time.

The Women’s team travel to Exeter City this Sunday (16 November). The women did not play this week, but return to Women’s National League Premier (South) action at the Devon FA HQ for a 2.00pm kick-off. Exeter sit sixth in the table; the Dons 11th. For those minded to travel, the ground is in Newton Abbot – postcode TQ12 1EJ.
